Michael Curry. P.E., S.E. is the founder, owner, and Principal in Charge at Curry & Associates, Structural Engineers.
Michael is a structural engineer with more than twenty-seven years of practical experience in all aspects of structural design and construction. He is a graduate of The University of California at Berkeley. His is a registered Professional Engineer in California and Virginia, and a licensed structural engineer in California.
He has a wide range of experience in varied project types including structural design for innovative new buildings, adaptive re-use of existing buildings, damage evaluation and repair design for existing buildings and other structures.
Prior to earning his degree from U.C. Berkeley, Michael held a variety of positions in the construction and related industries. He was a timber cruiser in the Pacific Northwest. He worked for five years as a land surveyor and civil engineering designer in New York State and also in Marin County, California.
Michael’s varied experience gives him a keen sense of how architects, engineers, contractors, and the end-users of buildings inter-relate during the design and construction process.
After earning his degree, Michael accepted a position with an A/E firm in Richmond, California and quickly became an invaluable member of the structural engineering team. Michael then formed Curry & Associates, Structural Engineers (the California version!)
The firm was a quality based, client service oriented, architectural engineering design practice that produced and provided high quality construction documents and construction administration services. Michael was responsible for a variety of projects, from rustic water towers in Mendocino County, to modern homes designed by some of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most innovative architects. One of Michael’s projects was published in GA (Global Architecture) magazine, in part due to the exposed structure that Michael designed. Quoting from the article “We wanted to express as much life in the details as possible by exposing the true structure of steel trusses and lumber.” Michael worked extensively with the architect to refine the structure and develop beautiful inverted gable trusses and connection details. Michael then merged his firm with a full services A/E firm in Richmond, California, where he served as Managing Principal, building a design group within the engineering division of the firm. Michael and his design team led the design of a variety of residential, commercial, educational, health-care, and civic projects, including cutting-edge celebrity homes, multiple fire stations, assisted-living facilities, and police stations. He also worked on a variety of historic structure renovations including a historic stone lighthouse at Point Sur and a historic railroad pier being converted to recreational uses.
Michael moved to Virginia in 2000 for family reasons, received his Virginia Professional Engineering License in late 2001, and returned to engineering practice in 2002, forming Curry & Associates, LLC, Structural Engineers. Michael views the design process as a collaborative and highly creative interaction between the design team, owners/end users, and contractors. He enjoys all aspects of the design and construction process, from the “gleam-in-the-eye” phase through completion of construction. He prides himself on his flexibility throughout the design
process – working hard to achieve the clients’ and architect’s vision while maintaining the structural integrity of the project and developing a cost effective structural solution.
