Charlottesville frequently appears on “best places to live” lists.  As recently as 2011, Sperling’s Ranked and Rated rated Cville the Number 1 place to live in the United States.

Sperling’s said “Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, most areas of this idyllic city are accessible by foot or bicycle,” the survey states. “Charlottesville enjoys clean air and water, and pleasant weather year-round, highlighted by especially beautiful fall foliage. Nearby Shenandoah National Park offers a wealth of recreation opportunities. Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia, which strengthens the area’s healthy economy by providing steady jobs and a wealth of amenities and entertainment.”

But Charlottesville has been ranked dead last in the state of Virginia for the condition of its bridges.  Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I have a feeling those “best places to live” lists won’t be including Charlottesville any longer if bridges start collapsing or have to be closed to traffic because they’re unsafe.
